Capes & Collars is more than an animal rescue; it’s a movement. Our challenge was to bridge the gap between outdated, guilt-driven shelter tropes and a modern, empowering digital experience. We engineered an uplifting "hero-centric" website that captures the joy of finding a furry sidekick, without sacrificing the educational depth or the seamless user journey required to facilitate real-world adoptions.

The Brief: The Pity Disconnect
Goal: Frame the project as a cultural shift (The Pity Disconnect) rather than just a website refresh.
The Narrative: For too long the pet adoption industry has relied on sad commercials and heavy guilt trips. Capes & Collars needed a digital home that felt the exact opposite: uplifting, smart and empowering.
The Challenge: How do you tackle serious logistical challenges like finding homes for senior dogs or bonded pairs without making the user feel overwhelmed or saddened? We needed to balance a joyful gamified superhero aesthetic with the practical tools necessary for matching pets to the right lifestyles.
Scope of Works
Brand Strategy
The Hero Archetype: We established the user as the Hero and the pets as their Sidekicks positioning adoption as an exciting positive life upgrade rather than an act of charity. We focused on building a narrative around the League of Heroes to foster a strong community of adopters, fosters and donors.
Web Design
Uplifting UI: Designing a bright native interface that mimics the feeling of a sunny welcoming community park. We utilized clean modern layouts paired with playful superhero motifs (capes, shields and vibrant colors) to create a high trust optimistic environment that encourages families to explore.
Optimized User Experience
Friction Free Matchmaking: We engineered a guided four step path to adoption designed to reduce overwhelm. By integrating tools like the Lifestyle Match Quiz we created a personalized flow that instantly counters the anxiety of finding the right pet for a specific living situation.
Pet Imagery & Profiling
Showcasing the VIPs: Moving away from sad behind bars shelter photos to bright personality filled portraits. We designated harder to adopt animals like seniors and special needs pets as VIPs (Very Important Pets) framing their unique quirks as superpowers to increase their desirability.

Despite the integration of interactive calculators and quiz flows the site was optimized for mobile first performance ensuring a smooth experience for users browsing for pets on their phones from the couch.
The empowering superhero environment and transparent educational tools have led to highly intentional browsing sessions. By framing seniors and special needs pets as VIPs users are spending more time exploring profiles they might have previously scrolled past leading to better forever home matches.
